[Boycott - Other News] 150 Days Hunger Strike Solidarity Protest
inminds 10 September 2012 As Palestinian hunger striker Hassan Safadi entered his 150th day of hunger strike the families of the prisoners called for actions of international solidarity, in response activists in London organised a vigil on Sunday 9th September 2012.
Around 40 activists from various groups came together in solidarity with the Palestinian hunger strikers to hold a vigil at the steps of St Martin in the Fields opposite Trafalgar Square which was hosting a Paralympics event that day.
Such a central location on a busy day guaranteed thousands of people passed the vigil, reading the banners and stopping to take a leaflet. Practically everyone was sympathetic to the plight of the prisoners and many stopped to voice their solidarity. A group of young ladies even decided to join the vigil and promptly asked for a pile of leaflets to help give out! Others asked if they could take a photo holding the 'Free All Palestinian Political Prisoners' banner. One person, not used to seeing Jewish and Muslim groups working together, initially thought one group was counter-protesting the other and was much relieved to learn that we were all there united against Israeli oppression.
The father of Palestinian prisoner Samer Al-Barq, who is also approaching 150 days of his hunger strike, appealed at a protest in Ramallah last Thursday: "Every minute matters in his life now. I want them to know that my son isn’t on hunger strike in search of death. He is simply desperate for a real life with freedom, dignity and justice. I urge them to take action, or if he dies, the responsibility for his death will be on our shoulders.".
The next protest in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners is on Saturday 15th September 2012 outside the FCO in Parliament Street, London at 4pm - full details: www.inminds.com/article.php?id=10563.

Featured MP3 Podcast [On Muslim prisoners post-911] "Its important for us not just to be able to fight the case legally but also for somebody like him to get them moral support. One should not look at the fact whether or not somebody is convicted.. one should be looking at the fact there is an individual here who is suffering mentally, physically and needs support - just letters and cards to say to him 'Are you okay? Please do not give up hope' - support of that nature is important for individuals like Isa and others like him.. remember this much - he converted to Islam, he doesn't have a Muslim family - where as others may have a Muslim family, extended members who may write to them and support them. Give moral support, it really does help a prisoner when he is sitting in his cell locked up 23 hours of the day.." Human Rights Lawyer Islamic Human Rights Commission 10th Anniv.
