25th February 2015, www.inminds.com

As part of our contribution to Israeli Apartheid Week 2015, please join us this friday 27th February outside the headquarters of British security company G4S, as we demand the immediate release of 15 years old Palestinian school boy Khaled al-Sheikh and 18 years old Palestinian journalism student Lina Khattab, both caged in G4S secured Israeli dungeons at Ofer and HaSharon.

Please note the protest is back to our regular time of 3pm, thank you.

15 years old Khaled Sheikh

KHALED HUSAM SHEIKH

On Christmas day last year Israeli soldiers abducted 15 years old Khaled Sheikh from outside his home in Beit 'Anan in Jerusalem. He has been caged in Israel's notorious G4S secured Ofer prison for over two months now. Israel has denied him any family visits and he has been denied essential medical treatment. Khaled suffers from several health issues including anaemia. His family are fearful for his health and are urging activists around the world to intervene to secure the release of their son. Khaled has not been found guilty of any crime and is being held on the flimsy accusation of throwing a stone. He is one of nearly 300 children that Israeli is currently caging in its dungeons, denying them their basic rights.

LINA KHATTAB

Lina Khattab, an 18 years old Palestinian journalist student at Bir Zeit University, was abducted by Israeli soldiers on 13th Dec 2014 at a student demonstration outside G4S secured Ofer prison, in support of Palestinian political prisoners. The occupation caged her without bail and denied her family visits for over a month. Through her lawyer Lina revealed she was abused and beaten by Israeli soldiers during her detention, and one of the soldiers hit her, ripped her clothes and shouted obscene insults at her. Last week on 16th February the Israel military court, which has a conviction rate 99.74%, convicted her on charges of “participating in an unlawful demonstration" and the usual trumped up charge of "throwing stones", sentencing her to six months imprisonment, a 6000 NIS ($1500 USD) fine and three years probation. Lina was clearly targeted for her activism on campus to deter other students, the military judge even let slip that "looking at her, I can see the characteristics of a leader." Lina is caged at Israel notorious G4S secured HaSharon prison where women are systematically abused.

Lina's mother Samira describes Lina "as a voice of truth and dignity in this unjust world."

ISRAEL'S TREATMENT OF PROTESTS FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS

The occupation has always come down very hard on protests in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners. In 2013 during a protest against Israel's torturing to death of a young Palestinian father Arafat Jaradat at G4S secured Megiddo prison, soldiers abducted another active Palestinian woman Inam Qlambo. The soldiers struck blows to her face and tore her hijab off, ripping her hair out. They threw her to the ground and kicked her in the womb. Under interrogation , at the G4S secured "Russian Compound" of Jerusalem prison, when she resisted orders to strip naked they attached her body to an electric shock device and tortured her. In her own words Inam recalls "I felt my body burning under their [electric shock] machine.. the intense pain.. so severe..".

TREATMENT OF WOMEN AT ISRAEL'S G4S SECURED HASHARON PRISON

Lina Khattab is caged at HaSharon prison. 22 Palestinian female prisoners are currently locked up at HaSharon including 3 young girls. They have reported suffering unbearable cold, the windows of their cells are not well sealed and that they lack the simplest methods of heating. There is an acute shortage of blankets and the prison is preventing prisoners families from bringing warm blankets and cloths from outside.

HaSharon is infamous in its mistreatment of Palestinian women prisoners. Women have had to endure beatings, sexually explicit harassment and sexual violence, and humiliation at the hands of Israeli guards. They are often forced to undergo degrading strip searches during the middle of the night - forced to squat naked and subjected to intrusive internal body searches, for no reason other than as a punitive measure. Women have been beaten and left tied to their bed for a day and a half and not allowed to go to the toilet as punishment for spilling water.

The cells at HaSharon are overcrowded and dirty, and infected with rats and cockroaches. There is a total absence of basic hygiene. Women have even been denied sanitary pads when menstruating. The food is insufficient and often contains insects and worms, at times there is not enough portions for all the women.

PROTEST TO MARK 2nd ANNIVERSARY OF TORTURE TO DEATH OF ARAFAT JARADAT

Last week on 20th February we protested outside the headquarters of British security contractor G4S to mark the second anniversary of the torturing to death of young Palestinian father Arafat Jaradat, in Israel's G4S secured Megiddo prison. Arafat was murdered 2 years ago, yet no one has been charged with his murder and we have not heard one word of regret or sorrow from G4S for its role in his murder.

"You cannot simplify the question of violence.. You look at human history - the American revolution, the civil war, the end of slavery in the United States, the African National Congress, the end of colonialism - by and large these were some combination of popular social uprisings and social movements and non-violent protests AND armed resistance. Now that doesn't mean I'm advocating for any armed action today, I'm not. I'm committed to finding ways of acting and speaking and making people laugh and doing art and disrupting the war machine in other ways, but I think focusing on violence when we have the comfort of being protected by mass of armed violence is not non-violence at all.. if you are pointing to the mass of violence and who's doing the mass of violence in the world today, you have to look to state violence - that's people bombing whole cities from the air..
