Steinmetz Blood Diamond Protest At Tower of London

inminds
25 June 2012

For the second consecutive week human rights activists on Sunday 24th June 2012 converged on the Tower of London to protest the De Beers display of the Steinmetz Blood Diamond. The diamond was meant as a tribute to the Queen to mark her diamond jubilee, but after revelations of Steinmetz's dirty secret of funding massacres in Gaza the display has become a liability for the Royal family with demands for the Queen to "say no to blood diamonds in the Tower" casting a shadow on all her jewellery.

Megaphone out, great speeches

Background

De Beers is sponsoring the re-presentation of the Jewel House at HM Tower of London, and as part of this they have presented the Queen with the Steinmetz Forevermark Jubilee Pink Diamond for display at the Tower of London to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The Israeli diamond company Steinmetz as De Beers main Sightholder (authorised bulk purchaser of De Beers rough diamonds) works very closely with De Beers. De Beers supplies Steinmetz with African rough diamonds and in turn Steinmetz crafts them in to gemstones for huge profits.

Samouni Massacre Funded by Steinmetz Blood Diamond

It has been revealed that the Steinmetz company through its foundation has adopted the notorious Givati Brigade of the Israeli military, funding it and supporting it whilst it committed war crimes in Gaza during the Israeli assault in Dec 2008 / Jan 2009. One of the Givati's most infamous massacres was that of the Samouni family.

In January 2009 Israeli soldiers of the Givati Bridage ordered around a 100 people in to the Wa'el Sammouni house at gunpoint. They then bombed the house killing 29 people. They then denied emergency crews access to the house for four days, shooting at ambulance drivers if they approached the house. After four days when rescue workers could finally approach the house they found buried under the rubble children traumatised beside the corpses of their parents and siblings. In case anyone mistook the intent of the Givati in this crime they left a message on one of the remaining walls of the house, daubed in Hebrew it read "The Only Good Arab is a Dead Arab".

A message from Gaza..

The surviving members of the Samouni family have appealed to the Queen and the British people to reject and remove offensive blood diamond display. Following this appeal activists are holding demonstrations outside the Tower of London in solidarity with the Samouni family. Report of previous demonstration here.

From Gaza to London - the Samouni family's words are read out..

The Demonstration

A young mother speaks..

A young mother asks the public "Imagine if it was your child trapped for four days without food or water, trapped with the lifeless body of their mother under the rubble left by the bombs of the Givati Brigade.."

A young mother speaks..

A good turn out means we have plenty of people to leaflet and engage with the public

The public were genuinely moved to learn of the plight of the Samoudi family and horrified that the HM The Queen was embroiled in this war crime by her association with its paymaster, the Steinmetz company.

Last leaflet?

The interest shown by the public was so overwhelming that we totally ran out of leaflets. One couple were so moved that they just emptied their pocket and insisted on giving us a donation for the campaign.

Why didn't I hear about this from the BBC?

Others wondered why the media wasn't covering this story, where was the BBC? When the Queen wears a green dress it makes the headlines yet when she hosts a blood diamond in the Tower of London, partners with a company implicated in financing what the UN Human Rights Council has described as war crimes and possible crimes against humanity, the media is no where to be seen!

On the way back from the protest we noticed this advert sponsored by the blood diamond merchants - De Beers - Forevermark (Steinmetz).
The red spray was applied in photoshop, we would never encourage people to defacing private property.

"1763 in the Ohio river valley you got Lord Jeffrey Amherst committing to written order an instruction to his subordinate Henry Bouquet, having been defeated by Pontiac Ottawa confederacy in the field. The order essentially says that they have been defeated militarily and is therefore necessary for Amherst forces to request a peace, to sue for peace from Pontiacs people. He instructs Bouquet to convene a parlay with the Indian leadership for that purpose. And as is the custom, as is common courtesy among native populations as was known to the Brits at that time, it would be necessary for those who requested the council to give gifts to those requested to attend. Make those gifts, Amherst says, items taken from a smallpox infirmary in order, I'm going to quote directly now, this isn't a paraphrase: 'in order that we may extirpate this execrable race'. Now key is on this last word, had he said that we might eradicate the opposing combatants, their military capacity, their warriors.. what ever term he wanted to use, it would have been biological warefare. But he didn't say anything about that, he said the 'race'. His intent was to use biological means, to use disease, quite explicitly so, to eradicate an entire population group. And Bouquet was also kind enough to commit to writing in his response the next day, I have done as instructed, dispersing three blankets, two handkerchiefs and sundry other items, hopefully, he says, they will have the desired result. They did.. the lowest estimate of the number of people who died of smallpox as a result of that little gesture of friendship and goodwill is a 100,000!"
