Palestine Pete joins Bin Veolia Protest at the Natural History Museum

Palestine Pete says 'No to Apartheid'

The fortnightly demonstration outside the Natural History Museum (NHM), protesting against the french multinational Veolia's sponsorship of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition at the NHM, continued in to the new year with a protest on 14th January 2012. With over 20 activists attending in freezing temperatures, it was an impressive start to the new year.

Veolia is complicit in Israel's occupation of the West Bank by providing vital services to the illegal Israeli settlements without which they couldn't function. These includes providing rubbish collection services to many settlements and recently even IDF bases, and running the Tovlan landfill site in the Occupied Jordan Valley where toxic waste from Israel and the settlements is dumped. Veolia also provides bus services and a tram service between the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Israel thereby helping Israel consolidate its occupation of Palestinian land.

The protest was organised by London BDS with many local solidarity groups and students making important contributions.

'Palestine Pete' outside the Natural History Museum

Making his first appearance was 'Palestine Pete', a imaginative hand puppet holding his own "Say No to Apartheid: Bin Veolia" placard. He was an instant success with children clamouring to listen to his words of wisdom about Veolia's complicity in Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

The creativity of the Palestinian rights activists contrasted greatly to the few Zionists who turned up to counter-demo, peddling old hasbra about Hamas and something about the Holocaust whilst totally ignoring the the occupation and Israels genocidal siege of Gaza. Many passers-bys had had enough of their lies, and whilst taking our leaflets, simply refused to take theirs even when forcefully shoved in their faces.

As people queue to enter the museum they are receptive to our message whilst repulsed by the Israeli hasbra

Interestingly whist chatting to people as they queued to enter the museum it was evident that many were already aware of the issues and even the specifics about Veolia's complicity - a sure sign that the campaign against Veolia was succeeding in educating the public.

With the Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition now also on display in Bristol Museum, local activists there are now also picketing that museum. There is no hiding for Veolia and its dirty crimes in Palestine.

Join Palestine Pete at the next demo outside the Natural History Museum in two weeks, on 28th January.

Veolia must stop supporting Israel's illegal settlements

Members of Amnesty and the Communist Party of GB also showed their support and solidarity with the Palestinian cause

"Scalp bounties were the payment of a fee for proof of death of an Indian, any Indian, on a graduated scale. At the top of the scale they would pay the highest amount for proof of death by way of the production of a scalp, or bloody red skin - origin of the term 'red skins' - of an adult male Indian. Half that fee would be payed for proof of death by the same means of a adult female, quarter to be payed for proof of death of a child, child being defined as as a human being under 10 years of age down to and including a fetus.. every single colony on the east coast, every state of the Union and territory of the United States within the confines of the 48 contiguous states, had in place, in some period of its history, a scalp bounty - removed usually when there were no longer sufficient number of Indians left to kill to warrant its continuation..that's as absolutely clinical a genocidal policy as is possible to envision, they weren't interested in any particular Indians, any Indians would do and they would pay for proof of death - they wanted all of us dead."
