Comment:

This powerful poem was written on the day of Ashura by sister Arzu Merali of the Islamic Human Rights Commission.

Background:

Within 50 years of the death of the Prophet of Islam(pbuh) a tyrant had taken power. The Prophet's grandson Imam Hussain(AS) stood for justice and refused to pay allegiance to the oppressive tyrant:

The Almighty God said : "The believing men and the believing women , they are guardians of each other , enjoin good and forbid evil... "God attaches primary importance to enjoining good and forbidding evil " as a duty for men and women. For he knows that if it were fulfilled all the other duties , easy or hard , will be accomplished. That is because "enjoining good and forbidding evil" is a call for Islam , it regains the rights of the oppressed and opposes tyrants. - Imam Hussain(AS)

With just 72 companions including family members, women and children he faced the tyrants army of 10s of thousands of soldiers.

Death with dignity is better than life of humiliation. To me , death is nothing but happiness, and living under tyrants nothing but living in a hell. - Imam Hussain(AS)

Imam Hussain and most of his companions were martyed in the desert of Kerbala on the day of Ashura (10th day of the first month of the Islamic calendar).

Through his actions of not compromising with injustice irrespective of cost, Imam Hussain achieved immortal victory and set the example for Muslims to follow. Some 1400 years later, the events of Kerbala still inspire Muslims to stand firm for justice and oppose oppression regardless of the sacrifice it demands. The victory of the Islamic Revolution and the victorious resistance of Hizbullah are testimonies to this.

The famous quote of Imam Jafaar Sadiq (AS) (great grandson of Imam Hussain (AS)):

Every day is Ashura and every land is Kerbala.

And amongst her tears and

those of whom we leave behind

Murder us and trample upon us dead,

here and hereafter

for we die with dignity

and our torch, our fire –

our call for justice

and the struggle to ensure its final final victory – burns

never to be extinguished

neither in Karbala

or Filisteen.
