A grassroots boycott against American products in Saudi Arabia
led by activists in traditional Palestinian headgear has led to
American exports to the Kingdom falling by 33 percent between September
2001 and March 2002. In the first quarter of 2002, when the Palestinian-Israeli
conflict was at its peak, the decrease reached 43 percent. Japanese
and French exports rose during the same period. The American embassy
in Riyadh downplayed the boycott, saying other factors such as currency
fluctuations and a decrease in some military purchase agreements
contributed to the decline.
