DATE: Friday 12th July, 5 - 7 pm
VENUE:

Opposite Downing Street,
Whitehall,
Central London

DETAILS:

Picket opposite Downing Street: Arms to Israel - no way! Direct or via USA !

Protest against the British government's complicity with Israeli war crimes: say no to the immoral, unethical sale of components for F-16 fighter planes used against the Palestinians.

Background:

MPs DEMAND STRAW JUSTIFY ARMS DEAL PLAN

JACK Straw has faced demands to appear before the Commons and justify the export of arms components bound for Israel from angry Labour MPs.

The Foreign Secretary announced the F16 fighter parts will be sold to the US even though completed planes will be sold on.

The Government currently refuses export licences for equipment destined for Israel if it could be used in the conflict with the Palestinians.

But Mr Straw says refusing to export the Head Up Display units would have had "serious implications" for defence relations with the US.

That prompted scorn from rebel Labour MP Alice Mahon, who warns of "real growing unease" among fellow backbenchers at the "completely immoral" decision.

She and fellow Labour MPs have now demanded that Mr Straw comes before the Commons to defend his decision.

Commons Speaker Michael Martin is deciding whether to allow the Private Notice Question - a Parliamentary device compelling ministers to answer criticism in Parliament.

Ms Mahon says the episode is further evidence of the Government slavishly following the wishes of George W Bush.

"There is only about half a dozen planes involved. They could have put it on hold," she said.

"It is just another example of Bush saying, 'Do this'."

Also see boycott news article about it.
